They are divided into primary, which convert energy resources into mechanical energy, and secondary, which converts energy that is generated by other sources:

  • chemical energy of fuel - internal combustion engine;
  • fuel, i.e. when burning fuel - a piston engine;
  • igniting the compressed air mixture in the cylinders - gasoline;
  • working by igniting fuel under pressure - diesel, which is characterized by its low cost and the possibility of long-term operation;
  • gas, operating due to the supply of heat (with a constant volume);
  • electric.

When choosing a motor, you need to know that the quality of the haircut directly depends on the engine speed: the higher this value, the higher the quality. That is, it depends on the linear speed, which is directly dependent on the speed of the cutters: the higher it is, the greater the grip.

It is known from practice that the optimal option is a home-made electrical design with the following characteristics:

  • motor power 1 kW;
  • number of revolutions – 1.5 thousand rpm;
  • grip - 50 cm. A less powerful engine - 500 kW (1500 rpm) will also mow weeds. But doing this will make him worse. At the same time, the knives of low-power motors become dull faster.

The electric mower has a convenient control handle and blades. Since the homemade design is powered from the mains, a long cord is required. To make work convenient, you cannot do without wheels, which are attached to the lower part of the frame, which holds all the parts together.

Where to find parts

For an electric mower, a motor with a power of 500 W or more from outdated household appliances that is in working condition is suitable. This could be a vacuum cleaner, drill, chainsaw, grinder or washing machine.

Engine selection

The best option in this case would be an asynchronous electric motor with a power of 500 to 600 W and higher. The number of revolutions during this operation reaches 3000 per minute. The great advantage of the asynchronous motor model is its quiet operation. The higher the engine speed, the better and smoother the grass is cut.

In general, the quality of mowing will be determined not by the speed of rotation of the knives, but by the linear speed of movement of the cutting edge relative to the vegetation . At the same number of revolutions per minute, the linear speed of the cutters becomes higher, based on the grip size (the diameter of the circle along which the cutting edge rotates).

Therefore, with a large grip (more than forty centimeters), the number of revolutions of the device can be significantly reduced. But in this case, the motor power rating must be greater to overcome the increasing resistance. Practice has shown that the following configuration is workable: grip - 50 centimeters, engine power - 1 kW, number of revolutions per minute - 1500. But the grass will be mowed, although worse, by an engine with a power of 500 W and a rotation speed of 1500 rpm. With low motor power, you need to sharpen the knives regularly.

To connect a three-phase motor to a single-phase system, you need to use the principle with a running and starting capacitor. Information about such a connection can be easily found on the Internet. It will also be easy to find a formula for calculating the required capacitance for capacitors. Most often in design, about 200 uF is used for a motor with a power of 2 kW. For a power of 500-600 W, only 60-80 µF is enough.

When creating a special casing for the engine, you must remember about the holes for cooling the device.

You can create a lawn mower yourself by using a simple electric drill with a speed of up to 3000 per minute. It will be easy to come up with a method for installing the drill to the frame. What should a homemade knife be like?

Tool steel strips 20-50mm wide and 2-3mm thick are a suitable starting material for the manufacture of this part. Although a thick knife is stronger, a thin blade cuts weeds better.

The knife can be:

  • a strip, the ends of which are sharpened and serve as knives;
  • consist of two knives, fixed to each other at an angle of 180 degrees. They can be located straight or inclined.

In the first option, the length of the knife and the width of the grip are equal - 30-50cm. The length of the knives used in the second case does not exceed 50-80 cm. There are several ways to fasten the knives - using one bolt or two. The second option is, of course, safer. But knives secured with a single bolt can, if an obstacle arises, fold without deforming or breaking.

In shape it can be straight, curved (like branded electrical devices), figured (trapezoidal). The part, sharpened at both ends, can be solid with a hole in the center for a screw.

The knife may be a composite structure, i.e. a sharpened piece attached to a steel strip by welding or bolting. The most unusual knife will be one that is a sharpened solid disk.

This type of knife is the safest: an ordinary knife can break if it hits a stone, but this does not threaten the disc.

The length of the cutter should be up to 0.5 meters, and the cutting part is often sharpened at an angle of 60 degrees. The edges should be made along the edges of the knife, and the shaft opening should be as precise as possible, because in the future the cutters will have to be balanced. All structural parts must be secured to the highest possible quality. To prevent deformation of the cutter after hitting a stone, it should be made prefabricated. It is worth attaching steel knives to the base in the middle on both sides using bolts. When struck, the knife will rotate and the risk of damage will be minimal.

It is worth making a hole in the plate to be able to install the motor. It is installed in the slot and clamped with a strip of steel, and then installed across the slot and tightened with screws. It is worth removing the part where the turbine is located from the engine. You will have to install a cutting element there. From the reverse side, dismantle the turbine, and then replace it with a tin fan. From an electric drill

A mower can also be made from a simple drill, and its main components are made on a milling and lathe. But first it is worth making a load-bearing element from a steel sheet. The base is fixed with a clamp, and 6 longitudinal cuts are made in the shank. The screed should be as tight as possible, and 8 holes are made at the tip of the flange for the support plate. It is made from 0.3 centimeter steel sheet. This will be the handle of the lawn mower.

8 holes are made in it for the base, and 4 of them are required for fastening to the guide. Another 3 will be required for the cutter pad, and it’s also worth making an eccentric from steel with a gap of 0.4 cm. You need to make holes for the sleeve on a lathe, and the curtains are made from rods 1 cm in diameter. The axle and pin are made of steel, and then hardened and ground.

The axle is installed in the shackle, and the pin is installed in the rod shank. Next, a guide with a length of 5 cm is made of steel. The remaining holes are made for fastenings, and then it is worth preparing the combs and drawings of the cutter. They are then applied to cardboard and created to form a template. Afterwards it is transferred to metal and processed. Next, you need to punch holes for fastening and guides, and then harden the metal. All that remains is to slightly sand the surface and assemble.

From a gasoline saw

A DIY chainsaw lawnmower is also a good option. To do this, take a motor that should be placed on the cart. It should be made from a frame based on profile corners 2.5*2.5 cm. Its dimensions will be about 0.5*0.6 meters. Install the wheels in the corners, and also place the tire and steering wheel there. A handle is made from the pipe, the height of which can be adjusted. A hose, steering wheel and cable are attached to it. Next, screw the engine onto the frame. Secure the tire using the hole in the gearbox. Place the casing mounts on the bottom, which will become the basis of the mower. Next, it remains to install the knives using welding. Handle of a homemade electric mower

The handle can be made of any length and shape - at the discretion of the master. If there is no stroller, it is made from pipes or cuttings of garden tools.

Whatever the handle is made of, the main thing is to choose it correctly according to the height of the person who uses the lawn mower. Its optimal length is about 90 cm.

Wheels provide convenience when working, allowing the mower to move easily. It has already been said that the best option for choosing wheels is a baby stroller. But wheels from a vacuum cleaner or a large children's car are also suitable. As a last resort, they are carved from wood.

The diameter of the wheels for a homemade electric mower is selected based on the fact that the distance between the ground and the blade is 5-6 cm. This height is optimal from the point of view of aesthetics and the quality of lawn cutting. When the grass is cut higher, the latter “breaks” and the lawn becomes uneven. If this value is reduced, it is dangerous to work due to the unevenness of the ground.

What to consider when assembling a segment mower

A metal beam is used as the basis for the structure, to which two knives are attached - upper and lower. When assembling, take into account the width of each segment and make sure that the distance between the elements is the same. The smooth and synchronous operation of the equipment depends on this.

  1. Each segment of knives is attached to a beam.

Assembling a lawn mower

For assembly you will need the following tools:

The finished casing is put on the shaft, then a sharpened knife is installed, securing the entire mechanism with a bolt. When this is done, the wheels are attached to the frame, for which angles with pre-drilled holes must be welded to it.

The size of the wheels is selected in such a way that the knife passes over the ground at a height of 5-7 cm. If it is lower, there is a high probability of its contact with the ground, and if it is higher, it will crush weeds (not cut).

How to make a homemade gasoline machine?

The easiest way to make such a device is from an unnecessary chainsaw.

Here's the procedure:

  1. Remove the bar with chain and clutch mechanism, and attach an adapter for a knife or fishing line to the shaft.
  2. Place the resulting device on a wooden or steel panel, then attach it to the stroller at the desired height.
  3. Duplicate the control of the carburetor damper (gas button) and move it to the handle of the stroller.
  4. Attach the knife or fishing line to the adapter.
  5. If necessary, install the deck.

Electric mower made from a drill

The main advantages include:
