When purchasing stainless pipes, you need to prepare in advance for the fact that they are measured not in meters, but by weight. This measurement method is quite convenient, especially for large batches - pipes that meet all standards are easier to measure in this way. This article will discuss how to calculate the weight of a stainless pipe.
To carry out full calculations, you need to know several indicators, including:
- Specific density of the selected steel grade;
- Pipe diameter;
- Pipe wall thickness;
- Number of linear meters of pipe.
Range of stainless steel pipes
Stainless steel pipes can be distinguished by purpose, type and grade. AISI 304 stainless steel pipe is a popular choice for pipelines as it has high chemical resistance. But this type of stainless steel is not compatible with high temperatures, as it is prone to the formation of carbide deposits. This problem can be avoided in AISI 3041 stainless steel due to its lower carbon content. Pressure pipes are typically made from either a combination of chrome and nickel or hard chrome.
Stainless steel pipes are available in a wide range of sizes. The nominal diameter is reflected in the marking. The inside diameter decreases as the wall thickness increases. Rolled products are produced in lengths from 1.5 to 10 m, but by agreement with the manufacturer it is possible to supply goods longer than 10 m.
The production and assortment of stainless pipes is controlled by GOST 9940-81 and GOST 9941-81. It includes electric welded longitudinal and spiral welded pipes, seamless pipes used under high pressure, large diameter welded pipes for high temperature applications and ferritic steel stainless alloy pipes. Welded pipes are less expensive and generally more cost-effective than their seamless counterparts. The wall thickness is more consistent, and the inner surface of the walls can be checked before production. The main advantage of a stainless pipe according to GOST 9941-81 is the absence of a seam and high strength.
Seamless stainless steel pipe
RUSEVROSTAL supplies stainless steel seamless pipes GOST 9941-81 in Moscow and all regions of Russia. Steel grades: (08)12Х18Н10Т, 10Х17Н13М2Т (acid-resistant), 20Х23Н18 (heat-resistant) If necessary, we provide the service of cutting these pipes to size. The minimum order for these pipes is 1 meter. Country of origin: Russia, China, Ukraine.
Areas of application
Seamless stainless steel pipes GOST 9941-81 are widely used in various fields:
- in general civil construction
- in mechanical engineering
- in the oil and chemical sector
- in the gas sector (when installing main pipelines)
- as well as in particularly critical areas where strict compliance with the GOST standard is required.

Thickness of stainless steel pipes
An important parameter when choosing rolled pipe products is the wall thickness. Stainless steel pipe diameter to wall thickness ratio (SDR) is used to calculate normal pipeline pressure and other operating conditions. The higher the SDR value, the thinner the walls of the product. According to this parameter, rental is divided into:
- especially thin-walled pipes – SDR > 40;
- thin-walled pipes – SDR = 13 – 40;
- thick-walled pipes – SDR = 6 – 13;
- especially thick-walled pipes – SDR < 6.
How to calculate the number of stainless steel pipes by weight of 1 meter using a calculator
For ease of calculation, there is a calculator on the PC APEX LLC website. The production company produces stainless steel products with minimal deviations from established standards, so the weight of 1 m of round pipes with anti-corrosion properties can be calculated quickly.
To do this, you need to insert the product type parameters into the appropriate fields:
- steel grade;
- wall thickness;
- section diameter.
After entering the data, you need to press the start button of the counting device. The online program itself will then calculate the weight characteristics of a linear meter of round pipes. The values posted on the same page will help you find out the necessary data for the calculation.
If customers cannot make calculations using the table on their own, they will be supported by duty managers. The consultant will tell you which brand of steel to choose for water supply, sewerage or heating. The company offers not only a full range of rolled stainless steel pipes of different brands, but also modern service. The company’s website provides a special calculator that allows you to calculate the number of round pipes based on the weight of 1 meter from the table. Once you know the preliminary volume, it will be easier to navigate its total cost. Qualified specialists working in real time will provide free consultations on the purchase of the required amount of pipe rolling.
Application of stainless pipes
Stainless steel pipes play an important role in the oil and gas industry. The need for corrosion-resistant pipelines has increased over the past couple of years as oil production depths increase. Such harsh operating conditions place special demands on pipelines, which is why stainless steel pipes are indispensable in the oil and gas industry.
Stainless steel pipes are used in large quantities in plumbing, as it is a durable material that can withstand water pressure well. In addition, the stainless steel surface prevents particles or bacteria from forming on the pipe walls and does not contaminate drinking water.
Stainless steel pipes of various sizes are used in a wide range of building structures. For example, fences, gates, railings, playgrounds and sports equipment. Stainless steel is often used to construct pipes over other metals, such as aluminum, when additional load resistance is needed.
Theoretical weight of a linear meter of pipe
When selling metal pipes and, in particular, stainless steel pipes, the price per kilogram is written everywhere. Those who are at least somehow connected with this type of activity know what we are talking about, but many others are just wondering why pipes are sold in kilograms and how they are usually weighed. Let's try to explain what the theoretical weight of a linear meter of pipe is and how it affects the cost of the batch as a whole.
As written on the page about pipe sizes, all round pipes are characterized by an outer diameter and wall thickness. If you take two pipes of one meter each, made of the same material and the same diameter, but with different wall thicknesses, then their weight will be different and so will their cost. To determine exactly how much more expensive one pipe is than another, it is not necessary to weigh them on scales; just look at GOST and look at their characteristics (dimensions).
Let’s be clear, let’s say we have 7 meters of 21x3 pipe made of 12x18H10T steel in front of us, in order to find out how much it weighs and accordingly find out its cost, we will need a table of the theoretical weight of 1 linear meter (1 running meter) (see below), which compiled in accordance with GOST. We look at the weight of 1 rm of our pipe and multiply by 7, thereby getting the total weight of the stainless pipe.
What to do if such a complete table is not in front of your eyes? There is a way out, in this case you just need to use the formula for calculating the theoretical weight of a stainless pipe:
WEIGHT 1 p/m = (Outer diameter [mm] – Wall thickness [mm]) * Wall thickness [mm] * 0.025 [kg]
or more briefly:
WEIGHT 1 p/m = (D-T)*T*0.025
According to the dimensions of the pipe from the table below, you can take its theoretical weight per linear meter.

Advantages
The main advantages of stainless steel pipes are:
- Corrosion protection. Corrosion is the main enemy of metal pipelines. The outer surface of steel, iron and concrete pipelines can be damaged by soil and ultraviolet radiation. Interior pipe walls made from other materials will tend to rust, become damaged by abrasion, or accumulate debris. But thanks to the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, this is much less common.
- Price-quality ratio. Stainless steel pipes are a durable product that will last for decades. This is a reliable material that is easy to maintain and install.
- Durability and versatility. Various materials, such as nickel, molybdenum or nitrogen, can be added to stainless steel to enhance its corrosion-resistant properties. Stainless steel can withstand extreme temperatures. By adding various materials to stainless steel, it is possible to reduce the wall thickness while maintaining high performance characteristics, which reduces the weight of the finished product.
- Appearance. Open pipes and fittings made of stainless steel are an excellent choice for areas that require external aesthetics, since the material does not require finishing and has an interesting shiny texture.
- Environmental friendliness. Unlike other piping materials, stainless steel does not need to be coated or lined with any materials. Stainless steel piping is 100% recyclable, reducing the environmental impact.
Why do you need to know the weight of a stainless steel pipe?
“Why know the weight of steel pipe products?” - the question is really reasonable. First of all, calculating this parameter is not so much an economically justified action as it is correct from a safety point of view. If you miss this stage when designing any structure (pipeline or building), construction work may not even have time to be completed before the structure is destroyed.
Of course, counting the required number of steel products significantly saves the budget of a company or group interested in construction. You will know exactly what costs you will face and what adjustments you can make to your plan. Correct calculations also allow the consumer to understand how many fasteners will be needed for a certain structural load.
Similar calculations are also carried out when installing pipelines made from products made from other materials: reinforced polypropylene, cast iron, copper, etc. Typical sizes are indicated in the product documents.
Calculation formula
The cost of rolled metal is indicated by weight; this is more convenient from the point of view of reducing the range of products, since the price per ton of rolled metal of the same type is the same, regardless of the diameter and wall thickness of the stainless steel pipe.
To calculate the cost per linear meter of rolled pipe, you need to know:
- material of manufacture;
- diameter or cross-sectional area (for rectangular products);
- wall thickness.
The formula for calculating the weight of one meter of stainless steel pipe of round diameter is as follows:
3.142 x Pipe Outer Diameter x Wall Thickness x Material Specific Gravity
For rectangular and square profiles, the formula will be even simpler:
(2 x (Wall Width + Wall Height)) x Wall Thickness x Specific Density of Material
The density of different grades of stainless steel is given in the table below:
Stainless steel grade | Brand | Specific gravity (g/cm3) |
Corrosion-resistant ordinary steel | 08Х22Н6Т | 7,60 |
04Х18Н10 08Х18Н12Б 17Х18Н9 | 7,90
08Х18Н12Т | 7,95 | |
10Х17Н13М2Т (AISI 316Ti) | 8,00
08Х17Н15М3Т | 8,1 | |
Corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant steel | 15Х25Т 15Х28 | 7,60 |
08Х13 (AISI 409) 08Х17Т (AISI 439) 12Х13 (AISI 410) 12Х17 (AISI 430) 08Х18Н10 (AISI 304) | 7,70
08Х18Н10Т (AISI 321) 12Х18Н9 12Х18Н12Т | 7,90
High-alloy heat-resistant steel | 08Х20Н14С2 | 7,70 |
10Х23Н18 | 7,95 | |
Structural cryogenic steel | 12Х18Н10Т | 7,90 |
Corrosion resistant alloy | 06ХН28МДТ (AISI 904L) 08ХН28МДТ | 7,96 |
Since the difference between the density of different grades of stainless steel is not significant and does not exceed 3%, an average value of 7.85 g/cm3 is often used in calculations.
IMPORTANT! Be careful when converting units of measurement
For example, let's calculate the weight of 1 m.p. stainless steel pipe AISI 304 53x1.5:
3.142 x 0.53 x 1.5 x 7.7 = 19.23 kg
Using this formula, it is easy to calculate the cost of any range of stainless pipes in accordance with GOST 9940-81 and 9941-81. It is also useful when estimating transport costs and calculating design loads in structures.
Specific density of steel pipes
The density values of the most common steel grades are as follows:
- Stainless steel structural cryogenic and corrosion-resistant heat-resistant steel – 7.9 g/cm3;
- Structural low-alloy and high-quality carbon steel – 7.85 g/cm3;
- Structural spring-spring and alloy steel – 7.85 g/cm3;
- Tool die steel - 7.7 or 7.8 g/cm3 (the value may vary depending on the steel grade);
- Carbon structural steel – 7.87 g/cm3.
When choosing stainless steel pipes, you need to select the appropriate value, according to which one cubic meter of pipes will weigh 7.9 tons.
Diameter and wall thickness
The wall thickness and diameters of pipes are standard values, therefore, pipes with standard values of these values are mainly manufactured in production. The range of stainless steel pipes is also regulated by their own standards: the regulations for electric-welded pipes are determined by GOST 11068-81, and for seamless hot-deformed pipes - GOST 9940-81.
However, deviations from these standards are always possible, in which case the weight of the stainless steel pipe will have to be calculated individually. Production lines allow the production of pipes of non-standard sizes, but only after agreement with the customer.
