Cutting for scrapbooking. What is it and how to do it yourself

Hi, I'm so glad you stopped by! Today I want to find out what cutting for scrapbooking is. I love scrapbooking for the many interesting materials, devices and details. And it is the details that give each product originality, uniqueness and a certain charm. It is precisely the cutting (or also called die-cutting) that is the very detail that makes the work interesting.

I have already talked about brads and eyelets. However, die cutting differs from them in that you can do it yourself. And today I’ll tell you how.

Scrapbooking: a little history

In one of our publications we already talked about scrapbooking, so this time we’ll devote just a few words to this concept. So, we will disappoint everyone who thinks that this type of creativity has appeared recently. The history of this art goes back several centuries. Initially, notebooks for recording poems and collecting all kinds of clippings were decorated with elegant decor.

Scrapbooking gained particular popularity in the 19th century after the advent of photographs. Over the next century and a half, this type of creativity became increasingly interesting. Special machines for scrapbooking began to appear on sale, as well as ready-made knives that greatly facilitate the production of cuttings.

What to do if the felling is poorly cut?

Complex knives (particularly very openwork ones) often require a little more effort to get them to cut correctly. Here are some tips to help you get better results when using them.

  1. First, try to do rentals more than 1 time (two or more)
  2. If this doesn't work, you can add a sheet of cardboard as a spacer under the "sandwich" and pass it between the shafts of the machine. This will add a little more pressure and help in those hard to reach places where the knife didn't cut well.
  3. If this does not help, then you can buy a thin metal spacer to place it under the “sandwich” and pass it between the shafts of the machine.
  4. If the tips listed above do not resolve the problem, then you may have a faulty blade and need to call the manufacturer for a replacement.

In one of the articles, I already reviewed one of these manual machines, which I use myself - Spellbinders Platinum 6.

There are also analogues: Sizzix Big Shot or We R Memory Keepers Evolution. However, these products are quite expensive and not every beginning scraper can afford them at first. There is an option to buy a cheap analogue scrapbooking machine for cutting, for example, here.

What are scrapbooking knives?

This type of creative tool is nothing more than an openwork metal plate. One side of the knife has a smooth surface. The second has a convex edge, which is the cutting element. There are several secrets to choosing knives for cutting.

Give preference to products made of durable steel. Knives made of soft material will quickly become dull and will not be able to cut through the notch properly.

It is best to buy knives in sets. Manufacturers create wonderful themed sets with several knives made in the same theme.

The number of sets should increase as skill develops. To create home decor, just purchase several sets. For business, the choice should be more diverse.

Select figured knives for cutting

What else can you do

Using the same knife you can perform different jobs. In addition to simple cutting, you can do so-called embossing. It consists of pressed paper and an imprint left in it. This way you can leave any imprint on the sheet without cutting it out. To create embossing, you must use a special gasket. You will also need to use a punching machine.

Embossing is a rather original and beautiful way to decorate a photo album. Absolutely any knife is suitable for embossing. To understand how to carry out this procedure, you need to watch a training video.

To get the answer to the question of how to use knives in scrapbooking, you need to study as many different materials as possible. It also requires constant practice. Not all people are able to cut something or do embossing the first time. The problem may be poor quality knives or lack of skills. With determination, anyone can master the art of scrapbooking.

How is the cutting made?

There are several ways to make a die cut. When creating cuttings, knives can be used in conjunction with a manual machine or as an independent product. The first option is more convenient, and the second is affordable.

The most technologically advanced way to make cuttings is to use a plotter. However, it has several disadvantages. Firstly, a plotter cannot be called affordable equipment, so buying one for home creativity is not always advisable. Secondly, you need to allocate a special place for its placement, since the device must be connected to a computer to work.

Manual scrapbooking machine

Most often, modern craftswomen use this tool to create cuttings. The reason is the optimal ratio of price and operating comfort. To work, you will need only a few parts: 2 plastic plates, a knife for cutting and raw materials for its manufacture. Before rolling through the shafts of a manual machine, you need to make a so-called pie. To do this, place the knife on one of the plates with the cutting part facing up. Next, place paper or other cutting material and a protective plastic plate on top.

Felling with improvised means

If you don’t have a hand-held machine, you can create cuttings using improvised means. Masters offer several options. If you have punching knives, you can use any hard object to punch out the decor. At the same time, plastic plates are excluded from the cake, and the knives are fixed on paper or other material using tape. The cutting can be done without knives. To do this, you need to print several blanks, and then cut them out and decorate them using a figured hole punch or scissors.

Design features

Appearance

This mechanism is the simplest type of mold. It is designed to form a three-dimensional image on the surface of thick paper or cardboard using pressure. Most of these devices are mechanically driven. Models with electric drive are much less common.

The machine for cutting with subsequent embossing has a simple design. The device consists of a flat platform on which a roller is fixed. It fits against the base and has a mechanism to adjust the gap. Using a gear system, the roller rotates, for which a handle is provided on the side of the structure. An alternative is a small electric motor.

Equally important is the configuration of the device. The functionality and ability to perform certain cutting and embossing operations depend on it:

  • support plates. Designed to distribute pressure evenly over the entire surface of the workpiece. Usually made of polymer materials with good mechanical rigidity. At the same time, they must have slight plasticity in order to avoid breakage during work;
  • knives. Designed for controlled deformation of the processed material. They can have different shapes - round, square, rectangular or complex configuration. They are made of metal, part of the surface has sharp edges for better performance of the cutting operation;
  • magnetic plate. With its help, the knife is fixed in a specific area relative to the material. It is slightly smaller in size than the support plates. It is this part that most often fails (breaks). Therefore, it is recommended to have a supply of magnetic plates.

Additionally, the set of cutting and embossing machines may include templates of various configurations. To check the functionality, manufacturers complete the device with paper with different thicknesses. This will give you the opportunity to get comfortable with working with the machine even at the learning stage without consuming expensive material.

An important point is the material used to make the installation housing. It is often made of plastic. It must have a fairly high strength index, since during operation pressure is exerted on it by the working roller.

Decorative paper for scrapbooking

One of the materials for making both the albums and cards themselves, and cuttings for decoration, is special paper. Its peculiarity is the absence of lignin, fats, oils and other components. This ensures durability of products made from this type of paper, which is why it is often called archival. Of course, such properties could not but affect the cost of scrapbooking paper. Depending on the type of paper, it may be quite high. What kind of decorative paper is there?

  • Based on the placement of the print on the surface, the paper is divided into single- and double-sided.
  • The surface texture can imitate wood, velvet, linen, burlap, eggshell, etc.
  • Embossed paper is suitable for creating decor without openwork.

In addition, there is decorative paper with glitter, foil and other designs.

Models of scrapbooking machines

Experts know that machines of imported models Platinum, Flutter Cutter and others are widely represented on the domestic market. To understand which cutting and embossing machine is better, you need to carefully and thoroughly familiarize yourself with the most common brands and manufacturers. There is hardly any doubt that Chinese cars, while being cheap, will be inferior in quality to European models.

Let us consider each of the previously listed models separately, discussing their performance characteristics, main parameters and capabilities.

Spellbinders Platinum

Having bought a Spellbinders Platinum cutting and embossing machine, there is no need to buy expensive original Spellbinders branded knives for it; you can easily get by with relatively cheap AgiArt or Fantasy knives. The quality of the cutting is consistently excellent.

The machine has high productivity; its steel base allows for simultaneous cutting of material consisting of six layers. Its design is quite suitable for solving most creative cutting and embossing issues. Excellent results are obtained when working with thin materials of increased density, and with thick paper, cotton raw materials, dense wood and even metal.

Platinum machines are equipped as follows:

  • the cutting machine itself;
  • instructions for it;
  • working standard platform;
  • boards for embossing and cutting;
  • yellow-brown embossing mat.

If you buy knives from other manufacturers for your Platinum machine, you must take their size into account. You can only use knives whose dimensions do not exceed 152.4 mm. You also need to take into account the dimensional parameters of the desktop when purchasing sets of plates for cutting.

These devices are compact, they do not take up much space on the desktop, but at the same time they look very aesthetically pleasing. But they also have disadvantages: to cut larger sizes from blanks, you need to additionally buy special cutting boards, which requires additional costs. It is also not always convenient for a scrapper with a fragile constitution to transfer them from one place to another with a weight of 4 kg.

Big Shot

Many users are willing to argue that the Big Shot die-cutting and embossing machine is the most popular among similar devices. The latest model of this device is made in an eye-pleasing white plastic color and is very beautiful in appearance.

Weighing 3.4 kilograms, Big Shot has a multifunctional platform, one pair of cutting blades and a detailed manual for the user. Its important distinctive feature is that it is practically suitable for working with knives from almost all manufacturers of scrapbooking equipment.

The Big Shot works great on design paper and cardstock, thin metal sheets and leather. To this list of materials you should also add cork blanks, fabric and chipboard.

Although the quality of the resulting products is satisfactory, the disadvantages of the Big Shot machine include the fact that it is not foldable and requires a significant amount of space for operation and storage.

Prizm Spellbinders

The Prizm Spellbinders die-cutting and embossing machine has very good performance characteristics. It represents the latest project from American manufacturers, presented by the industrial firm Spellbinders. Having a lightweight design, the scrapbooking machine is quite suitable for using a wide variety of S1 and S2 format knives.

Let us list its obvious advantages over similar models from other manufacturers:

  • small overall dimensions;
  • light weight (816 g);
  • large width of used blanks;
  • convenient location of the manual drive handle.

The delivery set includes: the die-cutting machine itself, instructions for it, a base board, a die-cutting board, an embossing board and a matte embossing mat.

This version of the machine is suitable for those who cut small-sized products, who from time to time organize master classes and take the necessary equipment with them to the classroom. With the Prizm Spellbinders machine you can simply work in nature, in the countryside and during a break from physical labor anywhere.

But to cut out enlarged elements, this machine requires additional boards, which have to be purchased separately. But this does not outweigh all the other advantages of the device. Let's list them:

  • the platform of the machine folds out, thanks to which it can be stored in almost any box of limited size, on any shelf of the closet;
  • knives from any manufacturer can be used to work on Prizm Spellbinders;
  • the range of feedstocks includes up to 40 types of materials;
  • Long service life thanks to reinforced steel construction and quality workmanship.

Make purchasing Prizm Spellbinders easier at Scrap Goods stores. Once there, you can even find used cars that have been discontinued for a long time, the price of which will pleasantly surprise any buyer.

Sizzix Big

The platform of the Sizzix Big die-cutting and embossing machine includes three parts connected to one another.
The bottom platform has the greatest thickness, the thinnest is located in the middle, and the average thickness is on top. Combining platforms allows you to add a knife design and a die-cut sandwich of materials to the required thickness. Thanks to the precise selection of a package of blanks, when passing the material through the rollers of the machine, high-quality cutting or embossing of products occurs.

It is also very convenient for the user that on top of each platform there is an inscription instructing him on the correct folding of the cut-out structure. The set supplied with the machine must contain two plexiglass plates. They are transparent, located at the top and bottom of the platform, thus creating protection against minor mechanical damage to the body of the machine itself.

Craftsmen say that the concavity of the top glass, which occurs over time, does not interfere with work, but periodically replacing it will not hurt. You can buy a spare set of plates in Russia for about 600 rubles, but to order them from America, you will have to pay much more. But the price of a cutting and embossing machine will be lower precisely in the country where it is produced, in this case - in the USA.

What other types of paper are there for cutting?

Decorative paper is used to create decor only on special occasions. It is much easier and more affordable to make cuttings from simpler types of paper.

Cardboard

This time we are not talking about designer cardboard, but about ordinary cardboard, which you can buy in almost every stationery store. This material is great for creating die cuts due to its ease of cutting and variety of shades. Cardboard cutting holds its shape well and helps create voluminous decor.

Tracing paper

Some may call this material an unsuitable option for creating a cutting. However, the masters do not agree with this opinion. Thanks to its thinness and transparency, tracing paper is perfect for making delicate decor: butterflies, petals, etc.

Kraft paper

It is a packaging material of original brown color. Kraft paper is often used for scrapbooking in rustic and vintage styles. This material goes well with bases in pastel colors, as well as finishes made from rougher materials.

Corrugated cardboard

For a long time, this type of paper was used exclusively as packaging material, but modern craftsmen have found other uses for it. One of them is making cuttings for scrapbooking. When rolled through the rollers of a machine, corrugated cardboard is slightly flattened, but its relief remains very attractive.

We take whatever is at hand!

We invite all lovers of paper cutting to pay attention to other, no less worthy materials. The openwork cutting made from photographs looks very interesting and original. Agree, it will be difficult to choose more suitable material for album design!

You can expand your creative horizons with the help of ordinary wrapping paper, tea or cream boxes, promotional items that are distributed on the streets and, of course, newspapers. If the material is too thin, then before cutting it should be glued to a cardboard base.

How to use cutting?

Cut-out paper elements are used in scrapbooking in almost all types of work: in postcards, on album pages, on the covers of notebooks, in mother’s treasures and panels .

Cutting complements any composition well. For example, leaves and frames are used in women's work, gears and film - in men's work. And if you cut out gears or photographic film from paper in delicate shades, it can be used in women’s or children’s work.

By making the cutting yourself, you can significantly save on materials for decorating your work.

Original materials for scrapbooking

The choice of materials for this type of creativity is not at all limited to paper. You can make cuttings from almost anything that can easily pass between the shafts of a manual machine and can be pressed through using knives. We will dwell on several types of materials in more detail.

Cork

- ideal for creativity. On sale you will find sheets of natural cork in several versions: dense, thin with a grainy structure, and paper-based sheets. It is noteworthy that not only cutting from cork, but also the negative remaining after rolling has excellent decorative properties.

Textile

- another equally attractive type of material for cutting. According to the masters, decor can be created from almost any type of fabric. This is especially true for cotton and linen, which hold their shape well. Before starting work, it is recommended to iron the fabric and glue it to a cardboard base.

In addition to cork and fabrics, other materials can be used for cutting. Felt, leatherette and even foil are popular among craftsmen. If you are not afraid of creative solutions, try making a die cut from thin metal. It is not at all necessary to buy such material. An empty cut jar without a day or lid is suitable for this purpose. Are you afraid that a manual machine will not cope with such a pie? Experiment, but without excessive zeal, and you will certainly succeed!

Knives for cutting in scrapbooking

Thin metal knives are made from metal with the centers cut out. They are flat on one side and have a thin raised section on the other that highlights the design and serves as a cutting edge.

Digital cutting plotters use special thin knives to cut out images.

Both hand-held machines and digital cutting plotters can be used for scrap.

Little secrets of scrapbooking

  • It is best to glue materials together using PVA glue. You can roll the workpiece through the machine only after it has completely dried.
  • If after one rolling through the machine the decor is not cut through, the workpiece can be passed through the shafts again. Still not getting the perfect result? Add a sheet of cardboard to the “pie”.
  • A cut that is not smooth enough can be corrected using masking tape or adhesive film for clothing.
  • You can remove the cutting from the knives using a special tool, as well as using an awl, gypsy needle or other.

We have tried to collect for you the most complete list of materials for cutting. However, this does not mean that it can be called completely completed. Try your hand and create your own, exclusive recipes!

Master class “Punching knives and punching machines”

How do die-cutting machines designed for creativity work? What is needed for this?

A punching machine is a tool that is a rotary press that uses the pressure of two internal rollers between which material is passed. In combination with special metal knife-forms, the machine makes it possible to cut material according to a template. The capabilities of the machine are limited by the properties of the knife-forms used, namely the strength and height of the cutting surface, which determines the cutting thickness of a particular material. Some knives can only cut thin paper, while others can cut thick cardboard and even thin metal. If you have additional components (special rubber mats, plastic plates with embossing or “2-in-one” knives with embossing), this tool can emboss on paper, foil, cardboard or thin metal. The market is mainly represented by mechanical machines (where you need to turn the handle, driving the rollers), but there are also electric ones; just press a button and the cutting or embossing is ready.

When working with a cutting machine you need: a special platform consisting of several plates of different thicknesses for working with materials of different densities (usually included), working plastic plates that bear the entire cutting force of the knife (they deteriorate and require replacement after some time of use ), as well as for embossing - a special rubber mat and/or plate for embossing. For some types of knives, an additional magnetic mat may be useful, which is very convenient to use and does not allow the knife to move while working.

Additional accessories: extended plates for long stencil knives, additional adapter mats for some types of machines, used when working with knives from other manufacturers.

What types of cutting knives are there?

Today there are a large number of cutting knives, of different designs and manufacturers.
The choice of models is very wide and amazes the imagination, giving inspiration for new works. Many of the knives are universal and fit most cutting machines. Knives come in: -without a base (metal only), some of them are “2 in one” - with embossing, -on a thin foam base (usually a self-adhesive base is included), -knives on a plastic base with a protective thick foam layer - these are universal knives. Why are universal cutting knives more convenient?
These knives have a protective layer and can serve you longer.
They also do not spoil the rest of the paper (next to the cutting), because when rolled through the machine, after numerous uses, cuts remain on the working-cutting plastic surface, and they can be imprinted on the paper, leaving a mark, as with embossing. Knives that have a thick foam layer are better protected because the height of the knife is much greater and it is sharper. This allows you to make cuts on denser surfaces, such as leather, thick chipboard, fabric, thin metal, etc. These forms are easy to use and compact. Now let’s talk in more detail about universal knives using the example of the “Bigz Die 656640 Petal Cutting Mold,” which has once again appeared on sale in our Art-Lady store. The mold has the following dimensions: 14 cm * 15 cm. Suitable for use in Big Shot and Vadabond machines (with the plate for cutting the corresponding machine that comes with it). How to use a utility knife for cutting?
First, let's free the knife from the factory packaging; now it is almost ready for use. When using with a Big Shot machine, we only need the lower and upper transparent work plates, because... the thickness of the knife replaces the usual “sandwich” - the platform. First we place the lower transparent plastic plate, on it with the knife up (the soft foam part) we place our cutting mold-knife, then the material we need (face down) and cover it with the second working plate for cutting. We roll it through the machine. We take out ready-made cuttings and use them in our work.

And here is a step-by-step master class in photographs using the example of using thin fabric - organza.

1. Take a piece of fabric equal in size to the surface of the cutting knife. The fabric must be ironed well before use. Thin fabric can be cut through folded in several layers.

2. Place the fabric on a knife with the cutting surface facing up.

3. Place the knife on the working surface of the cutting machine in the following order: first, the lower transparent plastic plate, on it with the knife up (the soft foam part) we place our cutting knife mold with the material (face down), and finally close it with the second working plate for cutting

4. Roll the resulting “sandwich” through the machine. It is best to do this back and forth several times without removing or moving the knife.

5. We take out the finished result and carefully release the resulting cutting.

6. Using this cutting you can make beautiful flowers. To do this we will need to make two identical cuts.

7. To “fix” the fabric, use a candle flame. Option 1: string each flower element onto metal. awl and slowly rotate the workpiece at a distance of about 20 cm from the flame. The petals will begin to curl and the edges of the fabric will begin to tighten. The main thing is not to overheat the material. It will take training.

8. Option 2: string the entire flower onto an awl at once, i.e. several blanks of petals from larger to smaller and also heat over the flame.

9. Stamens can be used as the core of a flower. This is the kind of flower you can get from these blanks. You need to secure it with transparent glue on the back side.

10. And from a blank with long petals you will get a wonderful bud.

11. And this is the collection of a large flower.

12. These flowers, different in size, can be obtained from identical blanks, provided that the flame in one case (the flower on the left) was stronger, and in the other case weaker (the flower on the right).

You can also use other types of fabrics in your work: loose natural fiber fabrics (for example, cotton fabrics) are best starched and ironed before cutting, but non-loose, dense fabrics do not require special preparation other than ironing.

And another step-by-step master class in photographs using the example of using a die-cut made from double-sided scrapbooking paper (it is better to use fairly thick paper).

1. Let's make two identical cuttings from thick double-sided scrapbooking paper using the above work pattern and a universal cutting knife.

2. Carefully crumple the edges of each blank blank.

3. Then carefully roll each piece into a ball.

4. Let's unfold the blanks.

5. Stack the resulting blanks on top of each other from larger to smaller with a slight shift. We attach it with glue and decorate the core.

Where can I use ready-made cuttings made using a die-cutting machine?

The imagination of using cuttings made using universal knives is limitless and depends on the material you choose. For example, from fabric or leather flowers you can create beautiful hair decorations, elements for jewelry, decorations for decorating any surface (pillows, curtains, chandeliers, photo frames, decorative elements, etc.). Metal decor will be more durable and less susceptible to various influences. Paper, chipboard and cardboard make a great variety of scrap decorations. Imagine!!! All in your hands!

Here's my inspiration for you!

Master class “Delicate set (hairpin and earrings)”

1. To make earrings we will need: a wire hook, a bead stopper, a piece of wire and a chiffon flower bud made using a cutting machine (see MK above).

2. Using round nose pliers or pliers from a piece of wire, make a loop on the hook.

3. We pass the resulting loop into the hole in the bead stopper and use pliers to open the ends of the wire in different directions inside to secure it.

4. Drop a drop of universal glue inside the bead stopper, place an organza bud there, and slightly compress the stopper to the shape of the bud. Decorate the middle of the bud with pieces of feathers.

5. Decorate the metal base-clip with three organza flowers and feathers (see MK above). In this case, it is best to glue the elements using a glue gun.
