Hot-rolled steel square GOST 2591-88 is a metal rod with a square cross-section of different lengths and diameters. This product is available in diameter sizes from 6 mm to 200 mm. Its creation is based on strict compliance with GOST 2591-88 standards. In order to make the work easier, you need to know the exact weight of 1 meter of steel square. This article below will present a table of the weight of a steel square, as well as the number of meters in 1 ton.

What is the weight of 1 meter of steel square
Rolled metal is produced in the form of metal rods with different cross-sectional sizes. The length of the rods ranges from 1 meter to 15 m. Rectangular steel is produced in the following grades:
- carbon: St0, St1, St3, St5;
- structural: St20, St35, St40x, St45, 65g, 30xgsa;
- stainless steel.
The metal square has a very wide application. Particularly used in the construction sector, since the price for the material is not very high and the product itself is quite durable. Due to the large range of rolled products, it is often used in high-precision products.
The range of steel squares is divided into:
- according to the accuracy of manufacturing dimensions: increased (B) or normal accuracy (C). This affects the deviations in the weight of the square per linear meter;
- according to length characteristics: measured, multiple of measured or unmeasured length.
What are the sizes of a steel square according to GOST 2591-88 standards:
The range of metal rectangles according to the standards is produced with the following section sizes: 5x5, 6x6, 7x7, 8x8, 9x9, 10x10, 11x11, 12x12, 13x13, 14x14, 15x15, 16x16, 17x17, 18x18, 19x19, 20x10 , 21x21, 22x22, 24x24, 25x25 , 26x26, 28x28, 30x30, 32x32, 34x34, 36x36, 38x38, 40x40, 42x42, 45x45, 48x48, 50x50, 53x53, 56x56, 60x60, 63x63, 65x65, 70 x70, 75x75, 80x80, 85x85, 90x90, 95x95, 100x100 corresponds to GOST 2591-88.

This technical requirement is met by clean-drawn keyed steel, which can be in the shape of a square. In this table we present the dimensions and weights of square products.
It is worth noting that to select alloys for the production of key steel, pay attention to the technical characteristics. However, in addition to the chemical composition and the percentage of various components in it, absolutely every product according to the above requirement must have the following qualities:
- connect parts with high quality
- reliability of connection fixation
- prevent the part from turning
- protect items from various malfunctions

A metal square is a rolled product that has an equilateral quadrangular cross-section without a hollow space inside.
Depending on the production method, hot-rolled, cold-rolled and cold-drawn calibrated steel squares . Hot rolled steel is produced by preheating the metal before the mill according to GOST 2591-88. Cold-rolled square is more in demand due to its smoother surface and clearer thickness of the output product. Calibrated steel squares are manufactured according to GOST 8559-75.
The dimensions of the sides of the square (a in the figure) for hot-rolled steel vary from 6 to 200 mm, for cold-rolled steel from 3 to 100 mm.
There are squares of normal (B) and increased (B) accuracy. The square is made in measured, unmeasured and multiple measured lengths (l in the figure). By agreement with the manufacturer, it is supplied in coils.
An example of a square designation: a metal square 20x20 hot-rolled (6m) - a hot-rolled square with side (a) of the square 20 mm, length 6m.
Steel squares are used as blanks for subsequent processing into shaped or sectioned metal. Metal squares are used in the machine tool industry, automotive industry, agriculture for the production of parts for specialized equipment, in mechanical engineering for the production of shafts, pushers, bushings, axles, plungers and other parts; in civil and industrial construction; for the production of gratings, forged fences, fences and household decorations.
A square is made of steel:
- carbon steel of ordinary and high quality (grades St0, St1, St3, St5), - structural alloy, low-alloy (St20, St35, St45, St40X, 65G, 30HGSA), - stainless steel.
Manufacturers of metal squares: Omutninsky Metallurgical Plant CJSC, Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant OJSC, Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant OJSC, Arcelormittal Krivoy Rog PJSC.
Steel square GOST 2591-88 and GOST 2591-2006
GOST 2591 for a hot-rolled steel square assumes a metal profile of square cross-section without a hollow space inside, with side sizes from 6 to 200 mm. Hot-rolled steel squares are made from steel billets on a rolling mill and supplied in rods. By agreement with the manufacturer, it is possible to roll with a size of more than 200 mm, and with a square side up to 14 mm inclusive - in coils.
Rods are produced:
- measured length, - length multiple of measured length, - unmeasured length.
— from 2 to 12 m (from ordinary quality carbon and low-alloy steels) — from 2 to 6 m (from high-quality carbon and alloy steels) — from 1 to 6 m (from high-alloy steel)
Used in construction in load-bearing structures; in a variety of industries, in the manufacture of stairs, gates, fences, and decorative elements; in mechanical engineering for the production of various machine parts.

Calibrated steel square GOST 8559-75
A calibrated square with a cross-section from 3 to 100 mm, produced by cold rolling, is manufactured in accordance with GOST 8559-75. To obtain the most accurate product, additional processing methods are used, such as polishing and grinding.
Sizes of 5 mm and more are manufactured in rods; those less than 5 mm are produced in coils. By agreement with the manufacturer, it is allowed to produce squares up to 13 mm in coils.
A calibrated square can be:
- measured, - multiple of measured - unmeasured length with a remainder of up to 10% of the mass of the batch. The remainder refers to rods longer than 1.5 m. - limited length within unmeasured.
The calibrated square is divided according to rolling accuracy into:
— B — increased accuracy — C — normal accuracy.
For the production of calibrated steel circles, the following steels are used: carbon, low-alloy, structural and alloyed and high-alloy.
Calibrated square is used in mechanical engineering as a blank for machine parts: axles, shafts, plungers, bushings, pushers, etc.
