Welding helmets: types, characteristics, features of choice

The best chameleon welding masks: review based on testing results
Today, few welders use traditional masks with a replaceable light filter. Everyone switched to “chameleon” masks with automatic light filters. Such masks are very convenient to use, they do not distract and help protect your eyesight.

What can we say about novice welders, for whom chameleon masks turn out to be simply an indispensable means of personal protection. Thanks to their use, a beginner quickly adapts to various working conditions and does not have to be distracted by unnecessary things.

However, even automatic chameleon masks are distinguished by their quality. Not only the design, but also the speed of operation of the light filter, the ability to adjust and turn it off, and much more. Therefore, we have prepared a review of chameleon masks, both budget and high-end, which have received a quality mark and recognition from professional welders.

Which welding mask is best to buy?

There are simple masks (with a darkening filter of varying intensity) and “chameleon” masks (with automatic dimming). The latter are more convenient and safer, but they only work when the outside temperature is not lower than -5 degrees.

  • For one-time work in a garage or country house, the cheapest model with a regular glass filter and a viewing window measuring 90x40 mm is sufficient.
  • To weld sewer or water pipes, you need the same simple model, but with an enlarged viewing window 100-110 mm in length and 45-50 mm in height.
  • When welding stainless steel, it is better to choose chameleon masks.

If work is performed in hazardous conditions, a model with additional ventilation will be required. It is selected according to the type of metal and working conditions.

  • Tips for choosing a welding helmet Chameleon

The correct selection of personal protective equipment (PPE) is the key to your health and many years of work with welding equipment.
When welding, the most important thing is to protect your eyes. For this there are 2 types of protection: a welding mask and a welding shield. The welding mask protects the face and eyes from the harsh radiation of the welding arc, as well as from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Most modern masks are made of heat-resistant plastic, but there are still some made from electrical cardboard and fiber. Due to the constant exposure of the glass of the mask to splashes from welding work, it quickly becomes unusable. Therefore, now almost all modern masks come with transparent plastic or glass protective plates.

The protective filter itself consists of:

  • cover glass;
  • tinted glass;
  • substrates;
  • plexiglass (depending on configuration).

There are several types of welding helmets:

  • classical;
  • under the Chameleon (it darkens itself when a spark occurs);
  • leather mask (for working in confined spaces);
  • with a rising filter.

The second option for eye protection is a welding shield. However, you have to hold it in your hand, and this is a significant disadvantage, because the second hand is occupied with the welding torch, and it turns out that it is no longer possible to correct the part in order to correct the direction of the welding seam.

The welding mask is attached directly to the welder’s head. It is adjustable so that it falls on the face by nodding your head. In this case, the mask will have to be lifted to inspect the workpieces being welded.

The best high-end welding helmets

Such models allow you to control the level and sensitivity of dimming. They have 4 arc sensors that reduce the likelihood of blind spots. Premium masks always have a large number of settings and functions.

90%

buyers recommend this product

This protection features an auto-dimming Class 1/1/1/1 filter for clear, clear vision. Thanks to Angular Dependence Compensation technology, the user does not see darkening, even when looking into the filter at an angle. In the X-TIG mode, electromagnetic sensors are used that respond to the magnetic field of the arc - that is, even in an awkward position or at low currents, the darkening of the filter is guaranteed.

There is also a grinding mode, in which the lowest sensitivity is used, and the user does not need to change the mask to safety glasses. The digital filter allows you to control precise settings for dimming (within 5-13 DIN), delay and sensitivity. The system is powered by solar cells with built-in batteries.

This ergonomic model with convenient regulators and a special anti-sweat tape guarantees the welder comfort in work. The manufacturer offers Aristo Tech HD with several options: an automatic air supply unit or hearing protection. The kit includes a carrying case and headband pads.

Selection criterion

To choose the best option for yourself, you need to know the nuances:

  1. The reliability of eye protection is the degree of darkness of the mask screen, which is expressed in DIN and varies between 3-15 units.
  2. Additional work mode - after the metal has cooled, the darkening is removed, the glass for the shield becomes transparent, which allows you to continue working without removing the mask.
  3. The effectiveness and quality of retinal protection depends on the response speed of light filters, which is considered optimal at a value of 0.1 s. Some Chinese experts underestimate this parameter, so you need to focus on average values.
  4. Welders often work in poorly ventilated areas, so it is worth choosing a mask with forced ventilation to avoid breathing toxic fumes from molten metal and smoke from burning electrode coatings.
  5. The weight of a helmet or mask plays a big role - if the headband is adjusted correctly, the product does not put pressure on the performer’s head. Lightweight polymer models will not be able to protect the welder from the mechanical impact of a fallen part or improvised tool.

To find out which brand of helmet will best perform protective functions, you need to familiarize yourself with the rating of welding masks, which will be presented in a separate section of this article.
