Chainsaws are highly powerful and compact, which is convenient for felling trees, collecting firewood or building from a log house far from civilization with a power source. But to operate a chainsaw autonomously, you will need not only fuel, but also oil, and two of the latter are needed: for the engine and for lubricating the chain and bar. We have compiled a rating of the best oils for chainsaws, dividing it into categories according to their intended purpose. When choosing top products for the rating, our experts took into account reviews from gas tool operators and the characteristics of technical fluids. This will help you choose an already proven product that ensures proper lubrication of the piston, crankshaft and working equipment.

Which chainsaw parts need oil?

If you look closely at a working chainsaw, you will immediately notice its main moving part - the saw chain, which slides along the bar while sawing. Since the law of friction still exists, both parts will gradually wear out. To slow down this process, it is common to use chain oil specifically designed for lubricating saw chains.

Chainsaws can be equipped with both four-stroke and two-stroke engines. For 4-stroke units, the crank group is lubricated with oil located in the engine crankcase. Two-stroke engines differ slightly in their design and operating principle. In this type of drive, gasoline flows directly into the space under the piston, where the crank mechanism is located, which has several bearings and bushings that need lubrication. Therefore, oil for two-stroke chainsaw engines is added to gasoline so that when it gets on the rubbing parts of this unit, it lubricates them.

Health and Safety

M-8B oil does not pose a threat to human health or the environment, provided that the rules of industrial and personal hygiene are observed, when used in the recommended areas according to the instructions for the vehicle. When handling the product, avoid contact of liquid with skin. Upon completion of manipulations, wash your hands with soap. In the event of a lubricant fire, use carbon dioxide, water spray, foam, or superheated steam to extinguish.

Full information on the safe handling of motor oil is indicated in the passport.

Choosing engine oil

Oil intended for 2-stroke engines must meet the following requirements.

  1. The lubricant should produce a minimum of ash during combustion. Ideally, it should burn completely.
  2. The lubricant must have good solubility in gasoline and a high degree of purification from various impurities that can cause clogging of very narrow carburetor channels.
  3. The oil must have high anti-corrosion, anti-wear and lubricating qualities.

There are certain standards for oils intended for 2-stroke engines: TC-W3 and 2T. Lubricant that meets the TC-W3 standard is used for water-cooled engines (outboard motors, jet skis). 2T oil is used as an additive to gasoline for 2-stroke air-cooled engines (petrol mowers, mopeds, chainsaws, etc.).

MOTUL Outboard Tech 2T oil

Oils can be green, red or blue in color. This is done so that their presence in gasoline can be easily determined.

If low-quality lubricant is used, the entire piston group of the engine may fail due to the formation of carbon deposits under the piston rings. As a result, they will not be able to compress, and scoring will form on the cylinder walls. Also, improper lubrication of the bearings of the crank mechanism leads to their overheating and, ultimately, to jamming. Important: using diesel oil to prepare the fuel mixture is prohibited, since it does not meet any of the parameters mentioned above.

How does lubricant quality affect engine life?

Now let's talk about how exactly the quality of oil affects the operation of the engine and its service life, since many people do not understand this.

The operating principle of a two-stroke engine implies that its internal parts are lubricated by the oil contained in gasoline. It lubricates the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings. The oil also coats the cylinder walls and reduces friction of the piston rings.

The chainsaw engine is highly revving, some models can reach up to 15,000 rpm, which puts a tremendous load on the bearings and other engine parts. An insufficient amount of lubricant or its poor quality leads to the fact that the bearings and piston run almost dry, resulting in an increase in temperature. Elevated bearing temperatures can cause them to seize.

Heating the piston to the limit causes it to melt; aluminum particles from the piston are transferred to the surface of the cylinder and, cooling slightly, become hard. The rings, passing through an area with aluminum build-ups, become damaged or jammed.

Another danger of poor-quality lubrication is carbon deposits. Carbon deposits can form under the piston rings, making it difficult or completely stopping them from working properly, and in the exhaust port. Cases where carbon deposits completely seal the exhaust window and muffler are not uncommon. Below is a video about the consequences of using low-quality oil.

Review of engine oil manufacturers

Among the manufacturers producing the best two-stroke oils, we can confidently name 2 leaders - these are the companies Husqvarna (Husvarna) and Stihl (Shtil). Companies produce not only conventional mineral oils, but also synthetic lubricants designed for 2-stroke engines operating in harsh conditions.

Husqvarna HP

This is a Swedish manufacturer, which includes several well-known brands, including the Partner company, known for its garden equipment for semi-professional and professional use. Husqvarna produces not only equipment, but also high-quality lubricants used on almost all brands of power tools.

The photo below shows Husqvarna HP 2-stroke oil, which contains special additives that can compensate for poor fuel quality, which is not uncommon in our country. After all, the octane number of gasoline purchased at a gas station does not always correspond to the declared one.

This lubricant is green in color and contains a semi-synthetic base. It can be packaged in both 10-liter and liter containers. The mixture is diluted in a standard proportion of 1:50 (20 g per 1 liter of gasoline). But when the engine has not yet been broken in, or work is to be done in the cold, the proportion can be increased to 1:40.

Stihl HP

The lubricant was specially developed for engines of Stihl equipment. It has a mineral base, has high lubricating and cleaning abilities and can be used at an ambient temperature of at least -10°C.

The bottle has a special dispenser that allows you to mix the fuel mixture without using additional measuring containers.

The lubricant is red in color and can be stored for no more than 4 years in a closed container. The latter can have different capacities, both large and small (for one-time refilling). For example, there is a 20-gram container on sale, the contents of which are added to 1 liter of gasoline. This is a very convenient option for owners of chainsaws who use them occasionally. Important: the mixture of gasoline with this oil cannot be stored for more than 1 month, since during this time it will already lose its lubricating properties.

Stihl HP Ultra

The oil belongs to the highest category. It is created on a completely synthetic base, has a green color and has high lubricating properties, and thanks to salt-free additives it does not create soot.

The oil was specially developed for lubrication of engines operating for long periods of time at high loads and low ambient temperatures, down to -25°C. In addition, this lubricant does not harm the environment. If it is spilled on the ground, it will decompose by 80% in 21 days. The lubricant is packaged in 100 ml and 1 liter bottles.

How to dilute chainsaw oil - expert advice

5/5 — (3 votes)

In this publication we will explain in detail how to properly dilute oil for a chainsaw, trimmer or any two-stroke engine. What oil is best to dilute gasoline with, what proportion to maintain, and also what the wrong dosage can lead to - you will find out the answers to all these questions here.

Oil, or additive as it is also called, is the most important component of the fuel mixture for a chainsaw. During the operation of the two-stroke mechanism, oil molecules settle on the internal combustion engine (cylinder walls, crankshaft, connecting rod) and create a sliding protective film. Thus, the physical contact of rubbing parts is significantly reduced.

Proportion of oil to gasoline for a chainsaw

Many users simply forget in what proportion it is necessary to dilute oil with gasoline for a modern chainsaw or trimmer. There is nothing shameful here, because most people ask this question literally several times a year. This information can be easily found in the instructions for the equipment, but it’s not so simple. For example, Chinese manufacturers often confuse us and write a ratio of 1:20 or 1:25 in the passport. This proportion is dangerous for the mechanism, which we will talk about a little further.

Correct proportion:

for our conditions (existing brand of oil on the market and quality of gasoline) it is only
1:50 (rarely 1:40)
. In other words, 1 gram of oil per 50 ml of gasoline.

amount of AI-92 gasoline, lquantity of 2T oil, ml
proportion 1:50proportion 1:40
0,510 ml12.5 ml
120 ml25 ml
1,530 ml37.5 ml
240 ml50 ml
5100 ml125 ml
10200 ml250 ml

AI-92 gasoline is used

. No 95, which in fact is the same 92, only with a bunch of additives that are extremely harmful for a two-stroke engine (since these additives dampen the proper detonation of the mechanism).

Important: In some cases, it is possible to add a little more two-stroke oil than usual (not 20 grams per liter, but 22-25 grams). For example, during running-in of a chainsaw after repairing the piston group or in the case of using cheap Chinese oil.

What oil is best to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw with?

It's no secret that every chainsaw manufacturer recommends using a two-stroke additive of its own production. But not everything is so simple here. If you buy an inexpensive Chinese chainsaw, then of course it would not be a bad idea to dilute it with oil from famous, trusted brands. So which oil is best to dilute gasoline with? — there is no one correct answer and this is influenced by a number of factors:

  • During warranty
. Most reputable manufacturers recommend using only their own oil. In the event of a warranty claim, if the service discovers that you have refilled with a different brand of oil, it has every right to refuse free service.
  • Proven brands
. Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna are well-known and trusted brands. This is the best thing on the market. Using branded two-stroke oil, you don’t have to worry about your equipment at all.
  • Cheap oil (Russian or Chinese)
. These are Champion, Rezer, Krotof, Patriot and many others. It is quite possible to use it, in some cases by slightly increasing the proportion of oil in the mixture. You should carefully consider your choice - read reviews, ask people. For example, our service was not at all impressed with Gazprom two-stroke oil - already 2-3 days after dilution with gasoline, it begins to lose its properties.
  • Beware of counterfeits
. Mostly Stihl oil is counterfeited. Similar options can be found at collective farm markets or among gypsies. Try to buy 2T oil in specialized stores from official dealers.
  • No 2-stroke boat engine oil
. It is not suitable for chainsaws and trimmers, because... designed for a water-cooled system, not an air-cooled one.

How to easily dilute the additive with gasoline

Only seasoned users who can accurately determine the proportion with an experienced eye can dilute two-stroke oil with gasoline “by eye.” But even they are often mistaken in this case. Here are several options for correct and quick adjustment of the gasoline mixture:

  • A syringe and a small container
are important for those who rarely use a chainsaw or trimmer. It is better to buy a 20 cc syringe, available at any pharmacy.
  • Factory packaging with a dispenser
costs a little more than a regular bottle, but is very convenient.
  • A special canister
    - this is loved by professionals who saw all day long and most likely with more than one chainsaw.
  • Single-use packaging
includes bottles and sachets of 20, 50 or 100 grams. Compared to a large bottle, it’s not very profitable, but some people don’t want to bother with measuring the proportion.

Be careful when mixing gasoline and oil. These are flammable substances, and in the wrong hands they pose a danger to health and even life. Follow safety precautions! The mixing process itself is quite simple and primitive:

  1. Find a clean container, preferably dark in color (food grade plastic is not suitable).
  2. First, fill in AI-92 gasoline
  3. Then add the adjusted dose of two-stroke oil.
  4. Shake everything thoroughly - this is important (including after the already diluted mixture has been left idle for some time).

How to store chainsaw oil

As a rule, the shelf life of two-stroke oil is at least 3 years. This applies specifically to pure oil (additive), provided that the packaging (bottle) is completely sealed. An already diluted mixture of oil and gasoline is a completely different matter. Many people mix it at once for the whole summer, for a year, etc. This is a very serious mistake!

The recommended shelf of diluted gasoline with oil is 2 weeks

. If you use inexpensive Chinese or Russian oil, it is better to reduce this period to one week. For example, even expensive high-quality Stihl synthetic oil retains its properties by 80% after 3 weeks of storage. There is no need to talk about other brands.

So why can’t you dilute oil with gasoline “in reserve”

.

Firstly, gasoline loses octane number over time. Secondly, the oil in gasoline gradually loses its properties. The additives in it dissolve in an aggressive environment and as a result, only the color remains. The consequences here are sad - engine overheating and expensive engine repairs (CPG).

Bottom line: dilute as much gasoline mixture as you plan to use, based on the intended amount of work. If there is old surplus left, it should be disposed of, even the one that remains in the tank of the chainsaw or gas trimmer.

Consequences and signs of incorrect proportions

Oil is added to gasoline to reduce the friction force of the mechanism, we already talked about this at the beginning of the article. Therefore, an incorrectly diluted or expired gasoline mixture will certainly result in dire consequences.

If you do not add enough two-stroke oil.

The engine will run without proper lubrication and will quickly overheat. This leads to scuffing/deformation of piston group parts. Chinese technology is especially susceptible to this. Often, repairing a piston engine is not economically feasible and stupid oil savings are the usual “death” of a chainsaw.

Symptom:
Mainly, the unit starts to heat up faster than usual. Vibration may occur, increasing as the speed increases. In some cases, the chainsaw or trimmer simply will not start - but this is even good, since you will have time to correct the critical error.

If you overfill two-stroke oil.

An excess of oil in the fuel mixture is just as harmful as an insufficient amount. The expression “you can’t spoil the oil filling” is completely inappropriate here. This only does not appear immediately, but after some time. To put it quite simply: during engine operation, the excess amount of additives simply does not burn out and is gradually deposited on the walls of the CPG. What does this lead to:

  • The formation of carbon deposits on the walls of the cylinder/piston - it cokes and falls out - scuffs form on the piston. The engine will need major repairs.
  • Excess fuel can spit out onto the air filter - cleaning the system and buying a new filter will save you.
  • The muffler becomes clogged - the exhaust gases simply have nowhere to go and the chainsaw or trimmer literally begins to choke under load. Plus, coked scale from the muffler can fly into the cylinder - again, piston repair.
  • Soot accumulates on the candle, it turns black and becomes unusable.

Sign:
Everything is quite simple here. If you add too much two-stroke oil to gasoline, the chainsaw or trimmer will literally smoke/smoke when operating. Moreover, the more it is poured, the more smoke there will be.

Is it possible to mix two-stroke oil of different colors?

In order to answer this question, you need to understand the two main types of oil. Based on its basis, two-stroke oil is divided into mineral and synthetic.

Mineral

2T chainsaw or trimmer oil is more common (as it is cheaper) and is usually red in color. There are also blue and even yellow colors. You can mix them, nothing critical will happen, but it is precisely in the situation “there is red gasoline left in the tank, but you need to fill up blue.”

Synthetic

two-stroke chainsaw oil (usually green) has a high cleaning effect and burns out much more efficiently during engine operation. Plus, its lubricating properties are better. Simply put, it is better than mineral, but also costs more.

Semi-synthetics

This is a mixture of the above
.
We will not focus on this type of two-stroke oil (usually blue), since it should be treated the same as the synthetic version.

Here's how not to stir two-stroke oil:

  • You cannot use synthetic oil after mineral oil. Mineral oil still leaves a small deposit in the CPG over time, which will begin to be actively “washed away” by synthetics. All the dirt will start flying into the piston and scratch it. The result is expensive and complex repairs. But after synthetics, it’s quite possible to switch to mineral water.
  • If you want to mix mineral oil of different colors in liters/canisters, this is not recommended. This also applies to mixing synthetic additives with each other.

Conclusion

A properly diluted gasoline mixture for a chainsaw (trimmer) is the most important factor in its safety and stable operation. The most important thing to understand from this article is to maintain a clear proportion of oil and gasoline. The two-stroke mechanism is harmed by both its excess and its deficiency in the gasoline mixture. Yes, some error is acceptable, but only very small.

Pay special attention to the brand of oil; it is better to choose a branded one, even if it is expensive. This is not a case where you can save money. Agree that piston repairs will cost an order of magnitude more.

Follow safety precautions and have a good job!

How to determine the ratio of gasoline and oil

The fuel mixture used in 2-stroke engines is prepared from a certain amount of oil and gasoline. The latter must have an octane number of at least 90 and be unleaded. AI-92 fuel is best suited for these purposes.

Gasoline with an octane rating of 95 is not recommended because it contains many different additives that are harmful to two-stroke engines.

To prepare the mixture, you must use only motor oil from reputable manufacturers. The lubricant must be intended for high-speed engines with an air cooling system. This component, intended for low-speed engines (moped, motorcycle, snowmobile), is prohibited.

When preparing the mixture, you must strictly observe the proportion of gasoline and oil. As a rule, this is 1:50, that is, you need to take 100 ml of oil and dilute it in 5 liters of gasoline. This rule changes slightly if the engine or piston system is new and requires break-in. In this case, the oil-gasoline ratio can be 1:40. For break-in, you will need 2-3 full refuelings of the unit with a fuel mixture with this ratio. If you dilute the fuel mixture in a ratio of 1:30, carbon deposits will inevitably form on the piston and inside the cylinder, which, as already mentioned, leads to breakdown of the entire crank mechanism.

Below is a table that helps you quickly determine the gasoline-oil ratio if you need to prepare a large amount of fuel mixture.

Selection criteria and scope of application

Before purchasing M-8B engine oil, you should make sure that it is really suitable for a particular vehicle.

Today, the M-8 is indispensable for servicing large industrial machines. The oil is actively used for motor vehicles with non-boosted or medium-boosted diesel engines (ZIL, KaVZ, GAZ, LIAZ, PAZ).

M-8V can also be used in passenger cars. It is noted that this mineral oil has proven itself especially well in models of the VAZ family operated in the summer.

Despite the fact that the stated service life of the lubricant is 18 thousand kilometers, it is better to replace it after 7-8 thousand kilometers.

M-8 oil is recommended for use not only in cars, but also in boat engines, walk-behind tractors and many other units. Owners of IZH motorcycles pour it into the gearbox.

Rules for preparing the fuel mixture

Gasoline and oil must be diluted in containers that are resistant to petroleum products (plastic or metal cans). It is not recommended to use plastic water, juice or milk bottles for these purposes, since food-grade plastic decomposes when exposed to gasoline. As a result of this process, the fuel mixture will change its properties, and it is difficult to predict what effect it will have on the engine.

The combustible mixture for a chainsaw is easy to prepare.

  1. Take the required amount of lubricant and pour it into the prepared container. You should not pour all the prepared gasoline into the container with oil; half the required amount will be enough.
  2. Rock the container slightly until the lubricant is completely dissolved in the gasoline.
  3. Now you can fill in the remaining gasoline, mixing it well with the mixture in the container. This completes the preparation of the fuel mixture for the chainsaw.

Before each refueling of the chainsaw, the combustible mixture must be shaken. Also, do not forget to tighten the cap of the fuel tank well, otherwise this will lead to a lean mixture and engine failure.

It is better to use the prepared fuel mixture immediately. Therefore, it needs to be prepared in such quantity that it is enough for the expected amount of work. If the mixture remains, then it cannot be stored for more than 1-1.5 months. During this time, it will lose a significant part of its lubricating properties.

Choosing chain oil

After each refueling of the chainsaw with the fuel mixture, do not forget to check the amount of oil in the oil tank. In a chainsaw, an oil pump delivers lubricant to the bar along which the saw chain slides. Normally, both tanks - fuel and oil - should be refilled at the same time. Oil for lubricating the chain must be poured into the appropriate tank up to the neck. Otherwise, it may run out before the fuel, which will lead to overheating of the chain and bar.

Chainsaw chain oil must be formulated specifically for this purpose. The use of other lubricants is ineffective and reduces the service life of not only the saw, but also the unit tire. This is explained by the fact that chain oil contains adhesive additives, thanks to which the lubricant literally “sticks” to the chain. This property of the oil reduces its consumption, as a result of which the lubrication of the chainsaw bar and saw chain improves, and their service life increases.

Another important parameter of chain lubrication is its thickness. If you are going to use a lubricant that is not intended for chainsaws, you may notice that oil leaks while the unit is running or after it stops. This fact indicates that the lubricant is too liquid. In addition, the liquid lubricant will quickly scatter in all directions and, accordingly, quickly run out.

When operating a chainsaw in winter, it is necessary to use oil designed for low temperatures to lubricate the chain, otherwise the oil pump will fail. Therefore, the lubricant remaining in the tank must be replaced with low-temperature lubricant.

Leading manufacturers of gas powered tools, such as Shtil, Husqvarna, Makita, Bosch and chainsaw component manufacturer Oregon, recommend the use of special highly adhesive oils, including biodegradable ones. But oils from well-known brands have the only drawback - the price is 300 rubles per 1 liter and more. In addition, the lubricant in the reservoir can thicken over time and clog the channels. For this reason, it has to be drained, and this already increases consumption. But despite this, we have to admit the fact that only the use of special lubricants can extend the life of the chainsaw.

Features of different types of oil

For two-stroke engines, types of oil such as mineral or synthetic can be used. The first option is more affordable, but synthetics have the main advantage - the absence of carbon deposits in the cylinder, which helps to increase the actual life of the chainsaw.

The use of more expensive synthetic and semi-synthetic materials is justified by their advantages:

  • ensuring trouble-free operation of mechanisms;
  • stability of the power drive;
  • reducing the cost of planned repairs;
  • longer life of the chainsaw.

However, after you start using mineral oil, when you have been doing this for quite a long time - more than 100 motorcycle hours, then you can no longer switch to synthetics. This is explained by the fact that when working with a mineral lubricant, carbon deposits formed on the internal planes of the cylinder.

Synthetics, due to their cleaning properties, can wash away this plaque, and pieces of carbon deposits can damage the instrument. Therefore, you should continue to use mineral oil.

Recommendations for choosing oil

There is no clear answer to which oil is best for a chainsaw, since the market is oversaturated with lubricants for 2-stroke engines. But, according to reviews from experienced craftsmen, it is still better to trust lubricants from well-known manufacturers, such as Oregon, Shtil, Champion, Husqvarna. By purchasing oils from these brands, you can extend the life of your tool and provide maximum engine protection.

Please note that there are counterfeits of well-known brands on sale, and if you buy them, you can ruin your chainsaw. Therefore, lubricants must be purchased only from official dealers who have product certificates.

Chainsaw chain lubricant, according to some users, can be replaced with any mineral oil with a viscosity of 15-40 for the summer and with an index of 10-30 for the cold season. The brand can be M8 or M10. Also, many chainsaw owners are beginning to wonder whether it is possible to replace 2-stroke oil with something. Experienced craftsmen strongly advise against adding other lubricants to gasoline, since you can completely damage the engine of the unit, the repair of which will cost as much money as you will not save on lubrication. Moreover, if you do the math, one liter of oil is enough to produce 50 liters of fuel mixture, which can only be consumed by working in a logging site.

Basic criteria for quality oil

The photo of chainsaw oil shows samples from various manufacturers. On sale you can find analogues from Chinese manufacturers. You can often encounter counterfeit products, although products from state-owned factories in China can be of quite high quality.

In order not to regret your choice in the future, it is advisable to pay attention to the following criteria for selecting a lubricant:

  • characteristics of the base, which can be mineral or synthetic;
  • lubricating qualities;
  • minimum parameters of smoke and toxic elements in exhaust;
  • eliminating the factor of soot formation during operation;
  • detergent and anti-coking qualities.

Chainsaw Partner 350 – ignition adjustment

If the Partner 350 saw stops starting, then you need to check the condition of the spark plug and ignition system. To do this, you will need to unscrew the part and inspect it. If it is clean with small light spots, then you need to adjust the tool’s ignition system.

Next you need to check the voltage of the high-voltage cable. To do this, use a light bulb or probe. If there is no voltage, the problem is a broken wire. If it is intact and is not broken anywhere, then you need to adjust the gap in the ignition system of the Partner 350 model.

To adjust the clearance, turn the 2 side bolts located next to the tool flywheel. As a result, the flywheel moves away from the ignition coil. After this, you will need to install a probe between the parts and turn the side bolts in the opposite direction. In this case, the flywheel should move closer to the coil. At the end, you need to carefully remove the probe and assemble the saw.
