Manufacturing of seam roofing: not only steel is used

Not only steel is used to make seam roofing. Copper, aluminum and titanium-zinc alloy are also actively used in the production of these products. Each material is unique in its own way and has a certain service life.

1. Steel is considered the most popular material for making seam roofing. Sheets with a protective coating of zinc or polymer film will last at least 50 years.

2. A seam roof made of copper will give your building a noble and at the same time rare appearance. After all, when using this roof, a patina will form on the surface of the metal, which will give your finish a unique greenish tone. The advantage of a seam roof made of copper is its long service life - at least 150 years and the good ductility of the material, which allows you to cover structures of any complexity.

3. Aluminum. Metal which, due to its low weight, creates a minimal load on the rafter structure. Having a plasticity similar to that of copper, aluminum seam roofing can also be used for roofs with complex shapes. Maximum service life is 70 years.

4. Zinc titanium alloy. This type of roof is particularly resistant to external negative factors, including thermal expansion. Therefore, subject to high-quality assembly, a seam roof based on zinc and titanium will last at least 150 years.

• Lock connection. Installation of a seam roof of this type is carried out without special equipment. Metal sheets are connected to each other using special locks. However, the tightness of such seams leaves much to be desired, so they are used where the roof slope is at least 18 degrees.

• Rough sheathing. Serves as a holding structure for vapor barrier and insulation;
• Vapor barrier membrane. Prevents the penetration of wet steam rising from the room into the insulation;

• Waterproofing membrane. Prevents moisture from entering the insulation structure from the street side;

Double standing seam

This type of roofing is called standing seam, because the connection of the pictures is made in the form of a standing folded overlap, and the name double seam is used due to double folding.
This lock connects all the roof elements, which are called “pictures”. Thanks to this lock, the double standing seam provides exceptional waterproofing of the roof even on slopes with a slight slope of up to 10°, and when using a seal in the lock, up to 3°. This very flexible coating can be successfully used on roofs of complex shapes and on radius surfaces. The double standing seam connection device involves two stages of lock formation.

Movable or fixed clamps are used to attach paintings to the base. Closing a double standing seam requires more operations and the use of special tools and a folding machine; this somewhat complicates installation, but ensures high reliability and tightness of the connection. If the roof slope does not have a large slope, then use a continuous sheathing. But here another problem appears: the accumulated condensate under the roof has nowhere to go. To prevent such negative consequences, a diffusion membrane is placed under the finishing coating, which is capable of removing accumulated condensate.

Valley device

Let us immediately pay attention to the requirements for arranging the base for the valley plank: the base here will be a solid wooden sheathing.

The design of metal junctions should ensure maximum tightness of the roof at the junction of two slopes. Therefore, the valley strip must be secured to the sheathing with clamps (in no case with self-tapping screws), and the junction of the paintings to the valley should be closed with a double fold.

It is recommended to bend the resulting ridge, forming a recumbent fold at the junction.

It’s not the best solution to make holes in the paintings (and at the same time the valley) with self-tapping screws. It is more correct to make a fold (fold) on the edge of the picture and place it on the corresponding fold of the valley. The result is a recumbent fold. The overlap size is approximately 30 millimeters. The endova, in turn, is attached with clamps to the sheathing.

These rules are relevant for folded pictures and profiles made from sheet or rolled products using sheet bending/folding equipment. When installing junctions on a “self-latching roof”, you should follow the instructions and recommendations of the roofing panel manufacturers.

Installation of vapor barrier and insulation

The arrangement of the “roofing cake” begins with the installation of insulation. As a rule, mineral wool is used for these purposes, which is installed closely between the rafters.

On the attic side, the insulation is covered with a vapor barrier. It is cut into certain pieces and laid on mineral wool. The butt joints of the canvases are connected to each other with construction tape. The membrane is attached to the rafter structure with a stapler. As a result, the inside of the insulation is completely protected from moisture penetration.

If the attic space is not planned to be heated, then installation of a vapor barrier is not considered necessary.

Installation of sheathing

A counter-lattice is mounted on top of the waterproofing membrane. These are 50 by 50 wooden blocks that are laid along the rafters and secured with self-tapping screws.

Perpendicular to the counter-lattice structure, the sheathing is installed. For this, boards 30 mm thick are used, which are laid parallel to each other with a certain pitch.

Special integrated solutions

For special tasks today, a complete roofing system is used. For example, this is offered by Astron. It is made of steel panels with aluminum-zinc coating and special fixing clips. Such panels have a thickness of 0.66 to 0.75 mm and a width of 600 mm.

The ribs have a height of 50 mm, i.e. quite high and provide additional rigidity, making it possible to install purlins in increments of 1.5 m.

At the same time, the fastening system is movable, which allows the panels to move slightly during thermal expansion. This technical point allows you to avoid deformation of the paintings. Will the same metal tiles or soft roofing be movable? That's another question.

Laying seam roofing

Laying a seam roof begins with a starting sheet. Its main difference is that it is attached to the base on both sides. Installation is carried out from the end of the ceiling, at a right angle to the cornice. All subsequent elements are mounted parallel to the starting one, so the first sheet must be laid strictly level. The elements are fixed directly to the sheathing; the installation method depends on the type of panels.

Sheets with a lock joint have a perforated nail strip along the edges. They are fixed with self-tapping screws, placing the fastening element strictly in the center of the oval hole. The fastening element presses the edge of the sheet to the sheathing, but at the same time leaves a small amount of free play for thermal expansion.
